Fourth Grade Curriculum

The Curriculum, as outlined below, represents the goals we have established for our students. It is our expectation that all students will work towards achieving these goals to the best of his/her ability. We offer a student centered learning environment designed to meet individual needs while developing a cooperative community spirit. To enhance their creative frontiers... this is our goal!

Language Arts/Reading

  • Phonics and word study
    • Recognizes and uses variant spellings for single consonants including:
      • c (s and k)
      • s (s and z)
      • j (j and g)
    • Identifies words using context and knowledge of phonics
    • Recognizes syllables, places accent on correct syllable and divides words correctly.
    • Phonetically decodes multi-syllable words
    • Correctly orders the words in a sentence and identifies incongruities in formation of sentence structure.
    • Know meaning of prefixes:  ex, pre, un
    • Know meaning of suffixes:  able, ment, ness, ful
  • Comprehension
    • Recognizes topic, main idea, details, sequence of events, and  variety of meanings from information.
    • Predicts the outcome or possible results from detail in story.
    • Identifies authors message from a selection and separates opinion from fact.
    • Recognizes commonly used foreign words and their meaning.
    • Identify simile and metaphor
    • Answer questions for a paragraph:  who, what, when, where, which, and how
  • Study skills
    • Utilizes dictionary and encyclopedia to identify meaning or obtain further information on a topic.
    • Paraphrases information from technical materials such as encyclopedia and prepares written report.
    • Know special features of a dictionary: etymology, pronunciation, parts of speech
