Kindergarten Curriculum

The Curriculum, as outlined below, represents the goals we have established for our students. It is our expectation that all students will work towards achieving these goals to the best of his/her ability. We offer a student centered learning environment designed to meet individual needs while developing a cooperative community spirit. To enhance their creative frontiers... this is our goal!
 

Language Arts

Phonics

  • Master true sounds a-z.
  • Begin blending CVC's.
  • Master beginning and ending consonant sounds.
  • Match letter symbols to sound, and letter symbols to key word.
  • Learn blends, digraphs, and vowel rules.
  • Applies word attack skills to CVC, CVCE, and CVVC words.
  • Learn to sound out complete words, including long vowels, in order to write own written response.
  • Zoo-phonics
    • Review and assess primary sounds. Emphasize big movements, and energy.
    • Begin with CVC words.
    • Introduce stepping out a sentence.
    • Incorporate Houghton Mifflen reading program with Zoo-phonics Language Arts Manual.
    • Fun learning games.

Visual Discrimination

  • Able to match letter symbol to letter sound, and letter symbol to key word.
  • aster upper case to match lower.
  • Follow a left to right progression.

Word Study and Vocabulary Development

  • Practice spelling words - progression of word families, plus weekly sight words.
  • Able to label pictures, situations, etc. with appropriate words.
  • Able to select word to match picture from stimulus word.
  • Able to select antonym and synonym for verbally presented word.
  • Discussion of common sayings, ie:
    • A.M. and P.M.
    • An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
    • March goes in like a lion and out like a lamb.
    • April showers bring May flowers.
    • Where there's a will, there's a way.
    • Do unto others as you would have the do unto you.
    • If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again.

  • Select correct illustration from descriptive information.
  • Identify main idea and supporting details from oral sentence or story.
  • Retell in correct order a series of events from listening or reading a story.
  • Answer written questions from listening or reading a story.
  • Use higher levels of thinking:

  • Use themed literature and weekly themes to easily associate and connect from one theme to the next.

  • D'Nealian font and learning progression.
  • Lower case letter study first, using the natural shape order.
  • Print first and last name.
  • Print all letters of the D'Nealian alphabet, upper and lower case.
  • Transform verbal responses into written responses with first teacher assistance, working towards independent answer.

Grammar

  • Use finger spaces, Captain Capital, and punctuation rules.

Speaking

  • Contribute ideas to class.
  • Read in front of class.
  • Relate a story to the class through words and/or acting.
  • Tell a story using complete sentences.

  • Myths and legends.
  • Fairies, elves, leprechauns, and trolls.
  • The legend of Oedipus and the Sphinx.
  • The legend of the Minotaur, Daedalus, and Icarus.

Math

  • Identify and classify objects by common attributes
  • Geometry - recognize basic shapes, complete shapes through use of mirror shapes
  • Numbers and Numeration
    • Recognize and write numbers up to 100
    • Understand terms of comparison (as many, greater than, etc.)
    • Count by 2's to a minimum of 20
    • Count by 1's, 5's, and 10's to a minimum of 100
    • Correct number pronunciation
  • Addition of whole numbers.
    • Understand joining of sets.
    • Add simple combinations, then sums up to 20
    • Apply understanding of addition concept to word problems, using manipulatives.
  • Subtraction of whole numbers.
    • Understand subtraction sets.
    • Understands that one always subtracts from the larger number.
    • Applies understanding of subtraction to word problems, using manipulatives.
  • Introduction to Fractions, recognizing 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4. And understanding of concept of fractions equaling whole parts.
  • Compare weight, length, height
  • Identify shapes
    Money / time
  • Spatial relationships
  • Collect, organize, describe, and display information in order to make sense of data.
  • Cardinal and ordinal numbers
  • Complete a pattern
  • Simple fractions
